For the purposes of this top ten list, I am considering films that were first released in the United States in 2007. I say that because one or two of the films on my list were released in some countries in 2006, but, at least as determined by IMDB.com, they were all first released in the U.S. this past year. So, without further ado,
1. No Country for Old Men
2. The Lives of Others
3. Michael Clayton
4. There Will Be Blood
5. Zodiac
6. The Bourne Ultimatum
7. Atonement
8. Gone Baby Gone
9. Deathproof
10. Waitress
Other favorites from this year considered for this list include: Juno, 3:10 to Yuma, Knocked Up, Once, Hoax, and Breach. It is only fair to mention that there are a number of films which by all accounts are stunning but that I haven't yet seen. These include Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, The Savages, The Assassination of Jesse James..., American Gangster, and Into the Wild.

A good list. I would probably put Lives of Others at #3 or 4 if I put it on this year's list. I put in last years list in the top 5. I think you'll love BTDKYD and Assassination, the others in your 'to be viewed' list are good, but not that great. Waitress in front of Once and 3:10 is a crime. My favorite movie that nobody heard about this year was Lars and the Real Girl. Some of the best writing in years, as well as the best brother movie. Doc loves Zodiac, as do several insider guys, like Jeff Well. I like it a lot, but don't love it, even after watching the director's cut last week.
Waitress is the "#10-because-i-liked-it-even-though-i-know-it-probably-isn't-a-top-ten-film." although, i don't think once is top ten either. i'll give you that yuma is better, but i didn't think it was that special of a film, and waitress was something i hadn't seen before. that said, i think juno was better that waitress, but it was so smug and waitress was so unpretentious....
as for the lives of others, outside the obvious story line, i loved the reaction of the two parts of that couple, the man who acted with integrity when push came to shove and the woman who didn't. How they were in love, but she was obviously the weaker of the two. to have that as a secondary issue playing out i thought was brilliant.
Lives of Others is my #3 last year (I go with Oscar not imdb - so Once is this year and Lives of Others is last)
I still haven't seen BTDKYD, Assassination, Michael Clayton, Atonement, Gone Baby Gone, Charlie Wilson, Juno, Into the Wild, Diving Bell, Lars, or I'm Not There. (It's like another top 10 list), but here is my update:
1. No Country for Old Men
2. There Will Be Blood
3. Zodiac
4. Once
5. 3:10 to Yuma
6. Knocked Up
7. Hot Fuzz
8. The Bourne Ultimatum
9. American Gangster
10. The Kingdom
11. Death Proof
12. Superbad
13. The Lookout
14. Eastern Promises
15. Sunshine
There Will Be Blood has No Country beat until the end when No Country went genius and Blood went crazy (I loved both, but genius wins).
"You can't stop what's comin'. It ain't all waitin' on you. That's vanity."
Priest...I'd leave Once out too. I watched it a week ago and though it was good and I loved the music it came across as a movie that you said you had to love in order to be "in".
I think the thing that killed Once for me was that it had been so over hyped that when I sat down to watch it and took in the 35mm shots and couldn't understand what the guy who stole the guitar case was saying...well there was no way it was living up to the hype.
Whereas, in contrast, I had heard nothing about The Lives of Others and was nicely surprised.
I do agree with you on most of the list. I didn't love Zodiac...mostly becuase it had some really long stretches that seemed slow.
