don't worry too much about Brothers. Review will follow. B. Tobey Maguire for the Golden Globe is a bit of a joke. He's good in the second half but in the first half, he's one dimensionally perfect. and, really, he's one dimensionally screwed up in the second. the acting is good throughout, but the only person that really impressed me was the five minutes from carey mulligan.

besides that, good list, although i don't totally understand your love for Pelham. i love the style (as i do in all Tony Scott pics), but wasn't that crazy about this one.

ps no star trek?

I have never seen a Star Trek movie and never will. Pelham is a great action film, but also speaks to interesting issues via Gandolfini's marital problems, Denzel's investigations, and Travolta's fallen worldview. You and Doc have to see In the Loop.

The dealing with Denzel's longtime marriage in Pelham hit it on the nose, which may be why Lawyer and I see it better than some.

In a bad year, it looks like Adventureland will land in my top 10 too. Looking forward to Avatar, In the Loop, and Up in the Air the most.

I figured you would have squeezed in Invictus by now.

My problem with Pelham is that too many things just don't add up. Travolta says things like, "I used to feed this city breakfast everyday" What? What does that even mean? I kept waiting for that to play in, but it doesn't. These guys have no problem killing civilians, but they aren't going to kill someone they find transmitting video of the event via videochat? Plus, Travolta's not going to run for it when there's a non-cop holding a handgun on him from fifty feet? He's just gonna stand there and let himself get shot? No way. That's tough shot (fifty feet, moving target) even for a professional gunman.

Shooting tips from the Priest...I trust a man who has had a bullet fired into his own home.

I'd ditto the commentes on Pelham...too many things didn't add up right for me and felt a little too convenient.

For a guy that likes Harry Potter, I think you're overanalyzing the plausibility. Unless something is WAY over the line (like riding a jet in the last Die Hard), I don't get bogged down in the logistics.

i'm not going to argue harry potter at this time. however, i would like to mention that what makes this year so odd for movies is there were so many good summer movies and so few good fall/winter ones. the summer gave us inglourious, public enemies, adventureland, up, the hangover, star trek, district 9. that's a pretty solid list of films (granted, they look even better since there's no "award season" films that are really shining). but after that summer there has been basically nothing.

Its been a depressing fall. I usually have 4 or 5 I am pumped to see - The Green Zone (Greengrass/Damon) and Shutter Island (Scorsese/DiCaprio) both got bumped to spring 2010 earlier this year, so it sort of ruined the whole season.
