Denzel Washington in Glory

Glory (A-) looks more and more melodramatic every year. The movie is overly preachy and hits its points with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. The performances of pretty boys Matthew Broderick and Cary Elwes are stilted and pompous, respectively. Morgan Freeman and Andre Braugher (his first film) are good but Denzel is on fire as runaway slave Trip. He’s a man amongst boys – truly the best thing in the film (James Horner's music is a close second). Sure, he’s given all the great lines, but he knocks them out of the park. Without Denzel, Glory would only have a couple of well-executed battle scenes and Morgan Freeman looking for someone to act with.
