Set to George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, one of the best opening sequences ever
Special note for you Oscar-freaks: Cinematographer Gordon Willis was not Oscar-nominated for this, The Godfather, or The Godfather Part II. (He did receive nominations for Zelig and The Godfather Part III, but never won.)
Some people can’t get past 42 year-old Woody Allen dating 17 year old Mariel Hemingway. It’s just a movie, folks. Something like that would never happen in real life.
The 59th street (Queensboro) bridge. The money shot.
Diane Keaton and Woody in the planetarium is one of several 2001: A Space Odyssey references. The references appear contradictory however with Woody finding human connections and Kubrick finding more and more detachment.
Wallace Shawn (Princess Bride) has never had hair (inconceivably).
Several times, characters are placed far right and far left with walls, etc. as manifestations of their emotional separation.
Woody gets all introspective when someone reads a book passage that was written about him: “He was given to fits of rage, Jewish liberal paranoia, male chauvinism, self-righteous misanthropy, and nihilistic moods of despair. He had complaints about life but never any solutions. He longed to be an artist but balked at the necessary sacrifices. In his most private moments, he spoke of his fear of death which he elevated to tragic heights when, in fact, it was mere narcissism.”
Woody bemoans the moral decay of society and wonders what future generations will think of us.
He exits left, camera pans left, and the skeleton replaces Woody in the frame. Discuss.
