The Slumdog Millionaire sweep continues. Simon Beaufoy won the WGA on Saturday and Slumdog racked up 7 awards at the British Oscars (BAFTA - British Academy of Film and Television Arts) today. I guess it's the only uplifting film and in troubled times (and a weak year), that's more than enough. But this awards tally is ridiculous. Not even Schindler's List got this many awards. i like how they give best original screenplay to In Bruges, then give it no other awards, although i see no way they could have executed the screenplay any better than they did. ridiculous. the awards are moving me from being okay with slumdog but not getting the big deal to hating it....
There are some films (Schindler's List, No Country for Old Men) that can withstand the weight of all the awards. There are some (American Beauty) that cannot and get a strong (perhaps too strong) backlash. Slumdog is fine and mildly diverting, but ultimately slight. It should have quit while it's ahead.
