South Park has always had a quick turn around time, able to lampoon events that just occurred. The entire production (from writing to final product) is unbelievably quick (just a couple of days – compared to months for an episode of the Simpsons). Last night’s episode included lines from McCain and Obama’s Tuesday night speeches – less than 24 hours prior. Sure, a large portion of the show was probably in the can before Tuesday night, but still impressive . . .
The show was divided into 2 parts. The best part exaggerated the reactions of the Obama and McCain supporters. The other part showed Obama and McCain in an overly elaborate plot to steal the Hope Diamond. I felt this part was a ripoff of Topkapi until Claude DeBussy’s "Claire de Lune" began, making the recent version of Ocean’s Eleven the obvious target. This part works very well, and fans of modern heist films will find a lot of references. But Randy (Stan’s dad) is hilarious and rules the episode. Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s skewering of the over-reactions of both sides is appropriate and (very) timely. See the full episode here. B+
