SNL - Ben Affleck 11/1/08

Having no films in the theater this fall, I’m not sure why Ben Affleck was hosting, but he had a lot of energy and had at least one classic SNL skit . . .which was his impersonation of Keith Olbermann.
John McCain opened the show with Tina Fey-as-Sarah Palin. His self-deprecating humor is likable but this kind of stuff is indicative of the kind of mistake-prone and uninspired campaign he's run. (He’s also had bad luck and had the deck stacked against him). McCain also showed up again at the Weekend Update desk and did well.

The fake “Jar Glove” commercial where Kristen Wiig kills Jason Sudeikis was my favorite faux-commercials in quite some time. The View sketch was nothing but an attempt to discredit right-wing hottie Elizabeth Hasselbeck. After the Olbermann sketch, Wiig had her triumphant Target Lady return where Ben Affleck played a corn-rowed UPS guy with a speech impediment. Seth Myers is definitely better at the Weekend Update desk without new mom Amy Poehler. The Staten Island Zoo skit followed, which was pretty hilarious, a kind of ADHD guide to giraffes. 3 of the last 4 skits (Night School Musical, Grady Wilson’s Marriage Techniques, and Biefhoff Brothers) were afterthoughts, but the Zolesky Brothers skit was very interesting if you’re familiar with Andy and Larry Wachowski’s offscreen happenings. Bill Hader was hilarious in this one. Overall: B

Note: Affleck will star as Stephen Collins in the American version of State of Play next April (Russell Crowe will be Cal McCaffrey). Later in the year, Affleck will star in Mike Judge’s Extract with Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, and Mila Kunis.

Note#2: Paul Rudd will host the next new episode of SNL on 11/15. Tomorrow (11/3), SNL will have a 2 hour primetime election special, hopefully with some new material.

This was a good episode. Olbermann/Affleck was especially great and SOOOO overdue. No one takes themself more seriously than Olbermann. Jar Glove was a repeat from last year sometime I think.

Although Armisen's Obama is weak, his Joy Behar in the View sketch was great. Affleck was funny in the target sketch and the biefhoff bros. GIRAFFES!, GIRAFFES! was really funny. Rudd should be great, and I am looking forward to Role Models this weekend.

Even though Armisen's Obama isn't the greatest (have you seen anybody's that was?), his Joy Behar with five o'clock shadow was funny even if he had never said anything.
And I'm sure Joy really appreciated that aspect of it.
