NBC Thursday - 11/6/08

New episopes of 30 Rock and The Office were excellent . . .

30 Rock: Believe in the Stars
Season 3, Episode 2

Wow – a superb episode guest starring Oprah who Liz meets on an airplane. The interaction (mostly due to Tina Fey’s performance) was first-rate - Oprah couldn’t help herself by looking directly at the camera at the very end. The rest of the episode had Tracy and Jenna discussing if white women or black men have a tougher time in America. And Jack tries to get Kenneth to compromise his principles. At the same time, they seemed to be poking fun at Michael Phelps’s SNL appearance and the Wayans’ White Chicks. See it here. A-

My 2 favorite lines, both by Jack (Alec Baldwin):

“Nobody flies without medication anymore. Why shouldn’t you enjoy the same luxuries as a dog?”

“Well, Kenneth, I give up. I thought pure morality died with Chuck Heston, but you proved me wrong. You are better than all of us. You are one Latina fantastica.”

The Office: Customer Survey
Season 5, Episode 6
Jim and Pam’s 8 hour phone call was an excellent idea and Jim and Dwight’s fake conversation (with Michael interceding) was a perfect centerpiece in an episode which showed a return to form. Gotta love Dwight yelling, “Buttlicker!” Also love Michael’s riff about guacamole. Kelly’s mugs were a terrific visual, too. I'd pay for a Creed mug. And, yes, I'm liking Ryan more and more. The “dramatic” ending worked well – Jim’s face giving away Pam’s future decision. I’m not liking where the Andy-Angela thing is going, but overall a great episode. See it here. B+

Tracy/Jenna was not as funny as it should be. But the kenneth/jack storyline was great.

Pam is annoying me this season, she needs to be physically present. Ryan continues his reign as best gen-x jerk on tv. Kelly's skewering of the shallow female is funny and great social commentary.

The Tracy/Jenna thing went after the taboo subject of liberal racism, which takes guts, even if it does lose some points in the humor department. Jenna imitating Michael Jackson in "The Wiz" is pretty great. Also, the Tracy/Jenna thing paid off when Jack starts telling them how white men have it worse than anyone.

I loved Ryan this week, I gotta admit. Escpecially, the "to the hilt" line.
