He's all over the place. I'll be just as unfocused: Westerns don't have to feel like cliches. The Appaloosa plot sounds exactly like Open Range or Pale Rider or the Magnificent Seven. Westerns won best picture in 1990 and 1992. Shane and High Noon are good, but not particularly great. A neo-Western won Best picture just last year. People have been talking about the Western revival for over 20 years. 50 years from now, someone will write a column calling for a crime scene investigation revival.
