Top 500 Singles of the Aughts

It seems a little early, but Pitchfork has released its Top 500 Singles of the Decade. It's a tad indie-rock heavy (and Eminem has NOTHING in the Top 100 but a collaboration with Dre), but you can listen to every song, and these lists were made for arguing. Check it here.

The list is too unwieldy and I am too uneducated on modern music to intelligently comment. This one is SCREAMING for a Europpraiser comment.

agreed on both counts. i'm afraid i only recognized half the songs in the top 20. still, i listened to most of them. they seemed pretty good. my #1 single of the last ten years: Hey Ya, hands down.

I just spent 30min looking this over. And it will take a lot more to evaluate (tear this thing apart).

Random thoughts - They have 2 songs from Yo La Tengo's And Then Nothing Turned Itself…, and "Let's Save Tony Orlando's House" is not one of them - Big Error.

Secondly, i was kind of annoyed by the top 100, but then raised my hands in victory as I read #2 - "All My Friends" by LCD Soundsystem. No Lie..I have listed to that song at least 300 times in the last 2 years.

One more - #69 "Rebellion (Lies)" by Arcade Fire has to a top 20 song at least. "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" is a great start to The Funeral cd, but not the best song, probably 3rd or 4th on the cd.

Also disappointed in the Radiohead picks. Trying to hard to be obscure.

Wolves by Phosphorescent needs to be on this list.

It's never a good sign when #500 is better than at least 10 of the top 100. Although I was quite pleased to see some strong independent bands on a list like this.

Needs some more Doves - Black and white town is not their best. The Veils completely left off is quite an annoyance.

Wolves by Phosphorescent is a joke, right? Right?

It's the best song about drug addiction in Years...Give me a better one sir.

MH (Matthew Houck): “Wolves” is pretty allegorical in the way that it’s written. Wolves are just a symbol in that song for something sinister and unsettling, but at the same time entirely beautiful. They seemed to be a good metaphor for conveying that.

Anonymous is actually Europpraiser this time.

Hey Ya is only song I had heard of in the top 20 which I looked through first, realizing that 500 is way too much to deal with. I look forward to reviewing this list and looking for a few I might like. Europpraiser's comments are appreciated and I'll start with those. Maybe Europpraiser could give a top 50 or so - please?

europpraiser, i concur with the majority of you comments (especially the radiohead issues). I've listened to Wolves repeatedly and I love it, but WAS IT EVEN A SINGLE? Neighborhood #3 is my favorite song off that album. To have two songs by Kanye in the top 100 and not mention Jesus Walks or All Falls Down is a travesty.
Doctor, you're heard Crazy for sure (my #2 of the decade) and 99 Problems (but a bitch ain't one) almost for certain.
Lawyer, I recently discovered My Girls (#9) and have listened to it non-stop. The lyrics should be right up your alley.

Hmm...From what i can see, just looking back over the list - Almost none of the "Indie" songs were singles. None of the Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Fleet Foxes, Japandroids, etc..

I guess they didn't define "single" too well.
